Job Description:

Apache Cassandra™ is exploding in organizations that need a massively scalable NoSQL database to power their modern transactional applications.  What makes Cassandra the database of choice is its fully distributed architecture, combined with industry leading performance.  Cassandra was built from the ground up with no single points of failure, making it the perfect solution for continuously available applications across multiple datacenters and the cloud.

DataStax was founded by Jonathan Ellis, the chairman of the Apache Cassandra project, and is committed to accelerating the growth of both the Apache Cassandra technology and its open source community.  In addition, Cassandra is at the core of DataStax Enterprise, a complete big data platform for businesses running their applications in production.

The cool stuff you'll do:

DataStax is looking for an engineer to help take Cassandra to the next level.  At DataStax you will work closely with Apache Cassandra project chair Jonathan Ellis and many committers both at DataStax and in the broader community from all over the world.  THIS ENGINEER CAN BE LOCATED ANYWHERE

  •  Design, implement, and review features and enhancements to Cassandra
  • Troubleshoot bug reports from internal QA, from customers, and from the Apache community
  • Analyze performance to identify bottlenecks
  • Eventually achieve committer status on Apache Cassandra
  • Introduce the Cassandra family of technologies to the world through blog posts and conference presentations

The stuff you'll need to succeed:

  • Strong Java background in systems or back-end software
  • Experience designing multi-threaded systems
  • Comfortable with a distributed team communicating primarily over email, IRC, and our bug tracker
  • Comfortable reading, reviewing, and modifying others' code
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Desire to become an Apache committer

The stuff that would be nice to have (but not a deal breaker)

  • Knowledge of the internals of modern file systems and OS kernels
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and application instrumentation
  • Experience with scalable systems design and implementation
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational databases
  • Experience with Apache Cassandra or Hadoop
  • Involvement in an open-source community
  • Experience with git source control
  • Familiarity with Python
  • BS degree in Computer Science
