Job Description:

About Us:

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Center’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s, is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Join us and make a difference!

About the program:

The Center for Statistics and Quantitative Infectious Diseases (CSQUID) is a joint program of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Florida. We are a group of biostatisticians, computer scientists, and epidemiologists who develop and apply quantitative methods to the study of infectious disease transmission. See http://www.csquid.org for more information.

Position summary:

We are seeking to hire a Postdoctoral fellow to work with our team of biostatisticians and computer scientists. The successful applicant would work with Dr. Dennis Chao (PI), Dr.Betz Halloran, and Dr. Ira Longini. For this project, we will partner with various international agencies to predict the effectiveness of using vaccination and other intervention strategies to reduce the burden of cholera. The successful applicant would collaborate closely with epidemiologists and biostatisticians in our group to develop mathematical models to study the dynamics of cholera epidemics and to predict the effectiveness of mass vaccination and other interventions. This individual must have experience in modeling infectious disease transmission and in fitting models to data. There may be opportunities to study the spatial dynamics of outbreaks. The final outputs of the research will be both journal publications and direct communication with international agencies to help guide cholera control policies, so good communication skills will be needed. Some international travel for meetings and presentations will be required. Opportunities to model other infectious diseases may become available.

The position, available immediately, is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

Minimum qualifications

• PhD in mathematics or related field.

• Experience in deterministic or stochastic infectious disease transmission modeling.

• Proficiency with statistical software, such as Stata, SAS, or R.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Desired qualifications

• Demonstrated interest in global health and the developing world.

• Familiarity with infectious disease and disease surveillance data.
