Sortable’s focus is making these decisions easy for ordinary people by handling all the data analysis and surfacing the best options in simple, beautiful interfaces. Sortable is a 7 person engineering driven startup, our fast growing websites are used by millions of visitors each month, and we need to expand!

 

The Job
Sortable is looking for backend software engineers to join our team. Our backend system powers our web, mobile and internal applications. It gathers, analyzes, and manages structured data on tens of thousands of products and services. We need you to help us build those services, and to take on problems and challenges that arise getting Sortable into the hands of our customers. At Sortable you’ll have the opportunity to build apps that get used by millions of people. Join us to change how people make decisions online.

 

Skills

  • Experience with Scala, Java or C#
  • A strong desire to solve tough problems
  • Ability to take responsibility and release features users love that drive our vision forward
  • Backend development: databases, algorithms, performance, threading
  • Top-notch communication skills – we’re a small team, you’ll need to fit in well
  • Bonus: Worked at a startup before, active in open source, personal projects, active blog, Linux experience, spending way too much time researching which product to buy

 

Environment
We use Scala for most of our development. In addition we have written tools or services in Python, Bash and Java. We want our team of developers to have fun and be productive, so we’ll expect you to bring your own ideas and suggestions as to what hardware and software should be used.

Other tools and services we use include: Lift, PostgreSQL, Redis, Mercurial, Jenkins, Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3) and Ubuntu.

Sortable is based in Waterloo, ON  in the heart of Waterloo Region's booming technology sector.  Kitchener-Waterloo has a large and diverse startup community for its size. 

 

Our office is conveniently located with endless amenities in walking distance including café’s, restaurants, and retail shops.  Sortable has a cool office space featuring a kitchen area stocked with hot and cold beverages, including an assortment of pop, water, mineral water and RedBull.  We have a large patio area great for ad hoc meetings or BBQ’s, and have mixed entertainment including video games, 60” TV’s featuring PS2 and Apple TV, or you can challenge a teammate to a game of foosball.
