Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY: Sears Holdings is seeking an energetic and talented developer to deliver innovative customer facing solutions for several eCommerce initiatives. We are looking for a Java Developer for the development and design of web components and services to introduce new capabilities and services for our online customers on a highly scalable eCommerce platform. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design and Engineering Practices

• Design & Develop eCommerce solutions using Java 1.5 and above, XML, SOAP, AJAX, JBOSS, Tomcat, Spring, Struts, Hibernate and other web technologies
• Drive innovation and new ideas throughout the delivery teams
• Analysis of business requirements and subsequent creation of high level technical design documents and technical specifications
• Analysis and identification of technical areas of improvement within existing web applications.
• Help research and recommend open-source and other technology frameworks that can drive innovation and differentiation of our web sites
• Maintain current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology, always on a look out for new technologies and work with management and development team in bringing new technologies.
• Design a robust, scalable, secure, efficient, and globalized feature area that enable customer/partner scenarios that are clearly described
• Create designs for feature areas that fully incorporate basic concepts such as diagnosability, testability, maintainability, discoverability, and performance, and that are extensible to other feature areas
• Identify design issues in the feature areas that cause multiple bugs, and recommended and implement design changes that correct the issues
• Design and implement reusable code for feature areas and/or reuse others' code as appropriate; optimize designs and code for performance, scalability, and reliability
• Create designs for feature areas that take into consideration the entire product life cycle, so that the feature areas are efficiently maintained
• Make appropriate design and architectural compromises between functionality, performance, dependency, quality, and reliability for feature areas, which ensures that the product release vision and pillars are met
• Provide feedback on product/technology vision and strategy, which enables owners and senior management to improve upon them
• Lead architectural and design reviews for the feature areas; the reviews surfaces key issues, improves quality, and enables faster completion of milestones

Implementation

• Create a schedule for feature areas and develop agreements between groups; take all dependencies into account, clarify priorities, be on target for each milestone, and remediate project delays
• Specify dependencies and risks for feature areas in advance and ensure appropriate mitigation, which eliminates surprises during the project and enables on-time delivery against milestones
• Advocate team coding standards, ensure feature areas comply with standards, and follow up with individuals and teams when standards are not met
• Write exemplary code and develop coding practices that are widely viewed as the best practice for the group
• Spot trends in software deployment data; proactively lead work on design, code, and process enhancements across other feature areas
• Ensure backwards compatibility of fixes across releases by designing and implementing appropriate methods, tools, and/or processes
• Ensured appropriate testing strategies are in place for the feature areas, which effectively reveal quality issues and prevent duplicate work
• Find most bugs and other quality issues in the assigned feature areas before code as peer reviewed or inspected
• Communicate gaps in business and technical functionality and assess impact to timelines
• Analysis and identification of technical areas of improvement within existing web applications
• Unit and system testing of application code, as well as execution of implementation activities. 


Customer and Business

• Establish customer/partner engagements that result in improvements to the feature areas and the development process or framework
• Analyze frequent serviceability problems or patterns in feature areas and develop troubleshooting tools that reduces customer/partner issues and serviceability costs, and/or improves design quality
• Directly engage with customers/partners to help them understand the design objectives and architecture of the feature areas
• Work with other internal IT teams to complete project activities, such as Infrastructure, Architecture and Database teams.


Leadership and Influence

• Proactively identify code, implementation, quality, or dependency issues with the group or other groups, and remove blocking issues or escalate issues as appropriate, which keeps the project on schedule and raises critical issues to management attention 
• Successfully lead feature areas from inception, design, implementation, and integration into the product line through the full product ship cycle (integration, customer/partner feedback, release, and sustained engineering phases)
• Provide ongoing mentorship of junior team members that improve the quality of their designs and code, and their overall performance
• Effectively articulate the key design principles for the feature areas to the immediate team and upper management
• Lead and mentor other developers in coding complex technical solutions
• Ability to prioritize work and help the team assess impacts to timelines
Qualifications:
Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree – preferably in computer science – or equivalent experience 
Masters degree preferred


Experience
5-10 years experience in the following:
• Extensive experience in leading the development of multi-tiered web applications on open source platforms utilizing Java/J2EE, XML, SQL, AJAX, REST, SOAP, ESB, AOP, SOA, JavaScript, HTML and other related technologies and concepts 
• Extensive experience working with open source frameworks and technologies such as JBOSS, Tomcat, MySQL, Struts 2.0, Spring, Hibernate, SiteMesh, Maven, Mule, Linux, JUnit, Selenium, etc. 
• Ontology and Semantic Web technology experience, such as RDF, OWL, SPARQL, and Jena/SDB, is a big plus 
• Rules / Recommendation / Personalization engine experience is a plus 
• Ruby/Rails or Groovy/Grails experience is a plus 
• Leader in open-source Java software environment 
• Experience with E-Commerce or other order processing systems

• Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus – especially in the areas of writing high-performance, reliable and maintainable code.
• Unix/Linux: Proficient in Unix commands and shell scripting. 
• Works well in a team environment and be able to effectively drive cross-team solutions that have complex dependencies and requirements.
• Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Thorough understanding of software development lifecycle and methodologies including code reviews and version control software such as CVS or SVN
• Good written/verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
